Maths & Phonics

How we are supporting your child’s learning using real-life math experiences and phonics

What we are doing to support maths

We are noticing the importance of giving children real opportunities to use numbers in context through finding out about the child’s interests, engaging children in simple tasks and cooking. It is not just about displaying numbers and number lines in the environment. Numbers need to be real and meaningful to young children, so it’s important to show them numbers in context.

Children need real-life maths experiences and the chance to repeat them often. This is how they remember them.

Use mathematical words to support children’s mathematical thinking.

We will observe what children are doing during play and make the links to numbers in context.

We have a good range of resources that will encourage curiosity and creativity.

Guide to Phonics

An Introduction

Starting in preschool children are taught phonics; the journey of learning to read, write and spell. These vital skills are the beginning of a lifelong literacy journey.

Phonics, which may also be referred to as ‘Letters and Sounds’, is the process of children learning to read. Phase 1 phonics is the first stage of the phonics teaching programme. At this stage, the focus is primarily on developing speaking and listening skills.

Speaking and listening are an important set of literacy skills that will create the foundation to a lot of your children’s further learning.  Listening requires the fundamental skill of focusing attention on the speaker to be able to hear and understand what the speaker is saying. Speaking skills require students to take turns, speak confidently, stay on topic, and speak with clarity.

The process of learning to read and write begins from an early age, where children can learn and practise many skills. This can be done in a range of ways and settings, including home. Exposing children to conversation and books is essential.

We are open from 7.00 – 18.00, Monday to Friday, 51 weeks of the year.
We close for 1 week at Christmas and close on bank holidays.

You can contact the Manager by phone or email to arrange a visit to look around the nursery. Due to routines and children’s sleeping patterns we usually make appointments to look around the nursery between the times of 9.30am – 10.30am and 1.30pm – 2.30pm, as we feel this works best for the children and does not disturb their routines. After looking around the nursery if you would like to reserve a place we would ask you to fill in a registration form, which can be downloaded from the link below, and pay a registration fee.
